* It's Rodeo Time *

The spectacle of rodeos highlights two key elements of our society that stand in the way of freedom and equality for other-than-human animals.  The first is that they glorify and perpetuate the message that it's ok for humans to dominate, control and exert violence against other living beings.  The second element occurs whenever anyone speaks out against the perverse exhibition.  Rodeos are brought in under the umbrella of tradition as if that will somehow absolve them of the callous treatment of the animals they use, and shield them from any criticism.  All of this is possible because they can only see the animals as nearly inanimate objects that they use for a profit.

However, the responsibility of perpetuating these messages in our society does not only rest with the people who promote rodeos.  It is also the responsibility of the people who attend them, cheering on the abuse, round after round.

There's one bright spot this year -- the City of Vancouver has banned rodeos with a unanimous vote from city council this week.  Congratulations, Vancouver!

Wherever you live, let the council and residents know of your opposition to what rodeos represent in our society.  Let's hope Vancouver's shift will be followed by many municipalities.
