Animals Not Created For Our AmusementLetter to Editor As published in the Windsor Star, Saturday, June 4, 2005 Re: Circus Draws Crowd, Criticism, May 30. A circus using animals, by its very nature, is among the most disturbing abuses of animals of our time. Animals being forced to perform unnatural behaviours -- like tricks to amuse people -- is an absolutely sickening image. To debate the definition of cruelty misses the point, because regardless of how well the circus could ever treat the animals, the bottom line is that they imprison and exploit them to generate profits. Furthermore, it's usually only a matter of time before anyone who is imprisoned snaps -- animal or human -- which is a tragic accident just waiting to happen. Instead of perpetuating the myth that it's OK to treat animals as mere objects that are sources of amusement, let's raise our next generation to genuinely respect all living beings equally, leaving them alone to live their lives freely.
